Self-Lensing By A Stellar Disk
نویسنده
چکیده
I derive a general expression for the optical depth τ for gravitational lensing of stars in a disk by Massive Compact Objects (Machos) in the same disk. For the more restricted case where the disk is self-gravitating and the stars and Machos have the same distribution function, I find τ = 2 〈 v 〉 /c sec i where 〈 v 〉 is the mass-weighted vertical velocity dispersion, and i is the angle of inclination. This result does not depend on any assumptions about the velocity distribution. As an example, if stars within the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) account for the observed optical depth τ ∼ 8× 10 as has recently been suggested, then v > ∼ 60 km s . This is substantially larger than the measured dispersions of known LMC populations. All of the proposed explanations for the microlensing events observed towards the LMC have difficulties. One of these proposed explanations, LMC self-lensing, which invokes ordinary LMC stars as the long sought-after lenses, has recently gained considerable popularity as a possible solution to the microlensing conundrum. In this paper, we carefully examine the set of LMC self-lensing models. In...
متن کاملLocal stability criterion for self-gravitating disks in modified gravity
We study local stability of self-gravitating fluid and stellar disk in the context of modified gravity theories which predict a Yukawa-like term in the gravitational potential of a point mass. We investigate the effect of such a Yukawa-like term on the dynamics of self-gravitating disks. More specifically, we investigate the consequences of the presence of this term for the local stability of t...
متن کاملThe effect of variation of stellar dispersion velocities by the galactic latitude in interpreting gravitational microlensing observations
Our galaxy is a spiral galaxy and its stars are mostly in a thin disk and rotate around the galactic center. The vertical component of the dispersion velocity of stars is a function of the galactic latitude and decreases with increasing it. In the galactic Besancon model, this dependence is ignored and they just consider the dependence of dispersion velocity on the stellar age. Becanson model i...

Received ; accepted – 2 – ABSTRACT An expression is provided for the self-lensing optical depth of the thin LMC disk surrounded by a shroud of stars at larger scale heights. The formula is written in terms of the vertical velocity dispersion of the thin disk population. If tidal forcing causes ∼ 1 − 5% of the disk mass to have a height larger than 6 kpc and ∼ 10 − 15% to have a height above 3 k...
متن کاملThe Stellar Halo in the Large Magellanic Cloud: Mass, Luminosity, and Microlensing Predictions
Recently obtained kinematic data has shown that the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) possesses an old stellar halo. In order to further characterize the properties of this halo, parametric King models are fit to the surface density of RR Lyrae stars. Using data from both the MACHO and OGLE II microlensing surveys, the model fits yield the center of their distribution at α = 5 21.1±0.8, δ = −69 45 ±...
